Post by Professor Faran Avergold on Jan 15, 2010 17:38:50 GMT -5
Professor Faran Avergold sat at the Staff table, his eyes scanning the four house tables. Each table was crowded with students of all ages and backgrounds. Placing his hands on the table he pushed back his chair and stood, the room around him quieting as the students noticed. When everything was quiet he cleared his throat, smiled and began.
"Good evening students, and welcome. I see many familiar faces but to those who are just joining us this year, I look forward to getting to know each and every one of you over your years here at Hogwarts. Many of you are new to the wizarding world but don't worry, you have been chosen for a reason, and I have faith that you will all excel here. That being said, I won't keep any of you growing students from your food any longer."
Faran clapped his hands together once and a vast variety of food and drink appeared on the tables. He sat back down as everyone started passing around platters and grabbing drinks. Smiling he grabbed a platter of roast beef, piled a few slices on his plate and passed it on to the next Professor.

Professor Hayes watched as the Great Hall went silent. The students looked up as Professor Avergold began his speech, and Kirstyn Hayes found herself holding her breath, in anticipation of the Headmaster's words.
Once Professor Avergold had finished, the hall erupted in applause, and Professor Hayes joined in. The tables began filling with food, so she helped herself to the roast beef that Professor Avergold passed her way.
"Looks like a good bunch of students this year, doesn't it, Faran?" Professor Hayes commented as she glanced around the hall. There were many new faces, scattered amongst the familiar faces of the older students. She hoped to see both these old and new students in her classes, which she was eager to begin.

Looking down the table Faran smiled.
"That it does Kirstyn. I'm just glad to see that so many of the students have returned."
After Faran had been named Headmaster by the Governing Board of Hogwarts, the wizarding world had been in somewhat of an uproar. Faran was the youngest headmaster in the history of the school at just 27, which made many people question if he could handle the job. But what he lacked in age, he more than made up for in life experience and was very wise for his age.
"I can't say the same for the staff though."
He looked down the table to each side of where he sat. The empty chairs far outnumbering the occupied ones. Apparently most of the former staff of Hogwarts were part of that uproar.
"I guess you could say out with the old and, hopefully soon, in with the new."

Post by Seti Troy on Jan 17, 2010 15:26:40 GMT -5
With the clap and sudden noise of a hall full of children clamoring for food, Seti woke from her nap. She hadn't looked like she was sleeping, with her eyes mostly open and still sitting up on the bench, but she had been taking a cat nap. She quickly stole a few slices of chicken as a platter was passed down, and managed to shake the sleep from her brain by the time she had enough sides on her plate to make a healthy meal.
Looking down the table, she was sad to see her only real friend here at Hogwarts was gone now. She still had Amber's letter from earlier in the month, saying how she had passed her Newts over the summer and wasn't going to be coming back for seventh year. The brilliant girl even had an apprenticeship all lined up, at 16! Seti was a bit jealous, and who wouldn't be, but she was happy for her friend. Frowning, she realized for the first time that she no longer had anyone at school to confide in, or anyone to ask for help, without worrying about asking an idiotic question.
With a dejected sigh, she smooshed her peas into her mashed potatoes and glared at her plate, as if it held all the answers to life's problems but just wouldn't spill. This year was going to suck, she decided. A second later she mumbled "I hope that doesn't turn into a self fulfilling prophesy." At least she didn't have O.W.L.S. to worry about yet.
With a deep, cleansing breath, she tried to shove all her negative thoughts out of mind and just enjoy the feast. She manages to stick a smile on her face that was somewhat convincing, and Tried to start up a conversation with the guy across from her. "Quidditch team took a heavy hit with so many graduating last year. You think we'll be able to field a good team?"

Auron listened to the new headmaster intently and clapped when the speech was over. Professor Avergold was one of the few adults that Auron actually liked. As the food was being passed around he took a little of this and that before passing it along. He took a big bite of some mashed potatoes just before the girl across from him spoke. When she was finished asking the question Auron held up a finger indicating he needed a moment.
"Sorry, I didn't want to answer with my mouth full of food. Its still too early to tell for sure, but I have a couple ideas that I hope will help."
As a pitcher of pumpkin juice was passed to Auron, who poured himself a glass.
"I'm Auron Drake by the way. Would you care for some pumpkin juice?"

Seti's smile became less forced as she realized she'd caught him with his mouth full, and she nodded slightly to let him know she didn't mind. As he introduced himself, she caught sight of the Captian pin on his robes. That easily explained why he thought his ideas would see the quidditch field. She was so unperceptive when she was in a funk.
"Please," She said in responce to the offer of juice, holding her glass where he could reach it. "Thanks. I'm Seti Troy," she added quickly, before taking a swig of her drink. "The other teams were hit pretty hard too, but I think we're the only ones with no one left. The ones who didn't graduate seemed to all get pulled because of the staff change for us."
She took a small bite of her veggies and mash, before waving her fork a bit to emphisize that "I was thinking about going out for the team. I talked my parents into going school shopping as soon as letters went out, so I've read ahead and taken notes nearly a quarter of the way through most of my books. I figure that'll let me keep up with classes no matter how crazy pratice gets." She frowned just a bit as she thought over her plan. "Granted, I'd have to actually Make the team first. I'm no born flyer, but my cousins out in the States haven't been able to knock me down in years." Her father's sister had two boys a few years older than her who thought it was great fun to knock her out of the air, both with muggle dodge balls and their own larger bodies. She could never out run them, so she had learned a lot of tricks to keep her seat.
"I'd be rubbish at chaser, I know. Quodpot's a bloody stupid game, but it taught me that much. Dunno where I'd do best, though. Never could convince my cousin's friends to do anything more than a four on four, Chacers and Keeper." She suddenly realized that she was rambling, and blushed slightly. She quickly hid it behind her glass when she went for another sip.
"So, Umm, do you know when tryouts are gunna be?"

Auron poured the pumpkin juice for the girl and smiled.
"Its nice to meet you Seti. Yeah luckily all the teams are in the same pinch as we are, if to a lesser degree, but it will definately make things interesting this year."
Listening as she spoke, at length, about her family and quidditch he nodded at different points she made. When she realized she was rambling and started to blush he chuckled to himself.
"Well as far as official tryouts I am going to wait till we get through a cycle of classes. Just so everyone can get settled. If you want though, I can book the quidditch pitch so you can see what position you are comfortable with. From what you've told me I'm thinking keeper or maybe even beater. I know there aren't too many female beaters out there, but I'm all for equal opportunity."

Post by Andrew Heartland on Feb 18, 2010 1:30:55 GMT -5
As Andrew Heartland sat calmly at the Gryffindor table, he looked up and down the expanse of food. There were very few faces he recognized... It seemed as though everyone he'd been close to the last year was gone, having graduated, or hadn't arrived yet. This would be a very long year if no one was going to show up soon...
Still, that didn't dull his eating habits. He shoveled a pile of chicken and potatoes onto the shiny plate before him and began to eat as fast as he possibly could under the circumstances. He looked forward to a soft bed that night, as well as hopefully meeting a few new friends. He would have to sign up for classes before that could happen, however...

Rosemary Waterbury smiled as the table suddenly became laden with food. She reached for a plate of honey ham, and took a couple of slices, and accompanied it with some boiled potatoes. As she dug into her meal, Rosemary glanced around the tables. She saw many new faces at each table, and knew that she might meet them in her classes or around the grounds.
There was a boy sitting not too far from her, and Rosemary noticed that he, too, was looking around at the table. It wasn’t unusual to do this on the first night, but something about him seemed to tell Rosemary that he didn’t know too many people at the table. She decided that she would be friendly and introduce herself, although she was sure that she had seen him around the castle…
“Hello. My name is Rosemary…Are you excited for a new year at Hogwarts?”

Andrew choked slightly when he realized that someone was talking to him. Looking up from his loaded plate, he saw a blonde girl with curly hair. She looked younger than him.
Smiling kindly at her, he finished chewing before saying, "Yeah, it should be a load of fun." Rosemary, her name was... he'd have to remember that. "Rosemary? My name's Andrew. Glad to meet you."
It was not surprising that a stranger would address him, either. Sitting at the Gryffindor table for six years had taught Andrew that making conversation was one of the many skills of the brave and bold students of Hogwarts.
"So, what classes are you planning on signing up for this year?" He thought about his own sketchy academic path. He would have to determine that for sure that night as well. He'd passed most of his OWLs, but there were two key classes that he might not be able to take, due to low grades. It depended on the teachers' allowances. But if his new professors were not as forgiving as he hoped, then he would have to rethink his entire academic schedule.
